Johhny had the ball.
He was moving fast but as if in slow motion.
The tackles came in but he side-stepped, dodged and dummied, ran like the wind and finally, dived over the try line.
His father, my husband was punching the air like a maniac.
The boys on the pitch were high-fiving in the frosty air. My boy, came jogging back down the field to restart the game
and it hit me.
I wait.
I look forward to the time when, one day, my child will do that something special.
I could spend my life looking forward. Thinking that today is building up to that "one day". That we are paying forward somehow, with our time or effort or money.
But in Johhny's face I saw.
Today.
Today was "one day".
He was utterly in the moment, using every bit of skill and knowledge he had to build the try.
He was ecstatic. Accepted, within an hour of starting to play with this new team. Getting coaching that stretched him beyond anything he had experienced before. Both parents watching him. It was all his dreams come true.
He has new "one days" already. He aims high. The A team, coaching with the nearest professional team, trying out for the best county teams.
But today, he savoured. Today was a "one day" come true.
So often I forget to enjoy, savour the dreams come true. I am already moving onto the next dream without really soaking up the present dream that has just come true. There are so many.
One day, Johhny wanted to play for the Ipswich Rugby Club. He dreamed that the boys on the team would be friendly. He dreamed that the coach would say well done. He dreamed he would get the chance to show what he could really do.
Today, that dream came true.
Tomorrow could be "one day" too.
